Flagstaff is best known for its historic downtown and mountain charm. Because it sits at 7,000 feet, it claims the prize of 3rd snowiest city in the US! Nearby Arizona Snowbowl ski resort offers great skiing and a small resort feel. Northern Arizona University (NAU) is located right in the heart of town.
It’s the closest decent-sized city to our property near the Grand Canyon and I’ve gotten to know it pretty well in the last year. I visit regularly for groceries, mail, and the gym.
Most people who have been to Flagstaff will tell you you have to go to places like Pizzicletta (save room for their house-made gelato if you go!), and Mother Road and Dark Sky Brewing. And while those are great recs, there are a few other places that I either like better or are just too new on the scene to be on most people’s radar.
Forêt Flg

This breakfast and lunch restaurant features by far the best food I’ve had in Flagstaff. My favorite menu items are the breakfast burrito (crispy pork cheek, pinto beans, soft scrambled eggs, roasted peppers, & spicy mornay cheese) and omelet au fromage, which is just the most perfect French omelet (with Boursin cheese and Plugra butter). They are serious about flavor here.
It has a nice vibe and also serves quality coffee and tea as well as cocktails.
Next-level bonus treat: they offer an Affogato made with Pizzicletta olive oil gelato.
High Country Motor Lodge

This is definitely a spot that seems to be under the radar, perhaps due to the fact that it’s a hotel. (Or should I say remodeled motel, just reopened in 2022.) It is absolutely stunning inside and has a quite large lobby/bar/restaurant area that is perfect for a remote office if you’re looking for a place to work. (There are electrical outlets absolutely everywhere, so you’ll never have to worry about battery life.)
Their small but mighty menu offers breakfast and lunch/ dinner. The breakfast sandwich is out of this world good and their pizzas are divine. (They import their dough from Italy.) Their sandwiches are skippable, IMO. They also serve coffee that holds its own against the best coffee shops in town. As well as a plethora of baked goods, many of which are gluten-free. Their General Store is a fun place to shop for high-end items and provisions.
And of course, they have a full bar, making it a great place to hang out any time of day or night.

If impeccable decor and fantastic food and drinks weren’t enough, the hotel also has many nods to Glen Canyon and Katie Lee throughout. If you aren’t familiar, it’s worth learning the history (here, or a shorter version here) so you can appreciate your visit even more. And then order the Goddess of Glen Canyon at the bar!
Beer and Wine

FLG Terroir: Wine Bar & Bistro is a really cute second-story wine bar with charming views of downtown.
However, our favorite wine bar in town is Oneo Wine Lounge. Their wine list is impressive and they have charming indoor and outdoor spaces. There is also a great beer bar next door, Hops on Birch.
Honorable Mentions
Need more suggestions in Flagstaff? Here are my honorable mentions:
Tourist Home Cafe is another strong breakfast (and lunch) spot. It’s worth the stop for their crullers alone (which also come in a gluten-free option).
Josephine’s Restaurant is great for classic dinner fare as well as brunch.
Karma Sushi is a good sushi joint. Be sure to check out their award-winning Arizona-made sake options and ask for real wasabi with your sushi!
Proper Meats + Provisions is a fun place to grab a sandwich or other provisions. I would rate it higher if they featured grass-fed beef or other well-sourced meats. For that you’ll want to head over to Square Root Foods (check their hours ahead of time).
